Are a fucking shambles. Last nights loss was a disaster, but without a full XI playing yet you've got some posters predicting a relegation fight. Pull yourselves together.

No they didn't Grassy you numb nut it's League One that is the opportunity and was for Southampton to build from the bottom up and invest as they chose in their youth. Our owners never looked to strip the club right down whilst still in the League below. The Championship is still an opportunity to patch together a team of half decent players and make a push for the Premier League which by appointing Sam they did.

League One is where a club like Southampton gets to put in place ideas where it's a 'nothing to lose by doing so' as there's very little choice but to use what's at your disposal, and in their case it was a fantastic youth set up our club would never look to be in that position as Southampton's miracle turn around was done down there.

stewie, one poster on here - and his trusty black Labrador - thinks that Southampton are at least our equals club-size wise and so, with that in mind, it's no wonder they finished 13 points above us...

They're moving to an 80k-seater ground in two years time, after all...

i would have us to have had a go at this and used the other cup games for giving the youngsters a run out.

Re: Some of the posters on here...
Personally, I wanted us to everything we could to make a fist of the game on sunday against a local rival who have had the better of us too many times.

I think Bilic had a choice, as he will get moaned at either way by some fans.

He probably chose to go with the owner's wishes.

Probably a good move as tey pay his wages.

The team we sent to Romania had a bloody good go at it.

Re: Some of the posters on here...
Our owners had that opportunity to Snide when they relegated us.

Unfortunately they opted for the lowest common denominator option as usual and went for Allardyce.

Re: Some of the posters on here...
Kronic, I agree to a point. Don't get me wrong, I'd have loved us to qualify, and I believe Bilic wanted to, going by the team he picked for the 1st leg. And all was going well, until a veteran who should know better was and idiot and got himself sent off. Two freak goals later, and it's a different situation.

I know it's modern day thinking, but I for one do think this season is different in terms of staying up. From next year, we'll generate a lot more money, have more to spend on players, have a better squad, and hopefully be in a much better place to have a go. It's not my ideal scenario, but it's where the club is, and I completely understand Bilic's reasons for the side on Thursday, for reasons I've stated below.

That doesn't excuse him from domestic cups, but seriously, does anyone think we genuinely have a current squad to challenge on 4 fronts, the 4th front potentially being as many extra games as over half a league season? Let's give the guy some time.

Re: Some of the posters on here...
I get your point Eerie but I'll take Europe via the back door, back alley or any other method. Just as I'd take CL finishing 4th.
And what if we did enter the EL via our league position? What's to stop us throwing it yet again if and when injuries etc crop up?

I'm just so fucking bored of the wretched PL being the priority at the expense of other competitions.

Re: Some of the posters on here...
The whole Southampton thing was built on the catastrophe of going down two tiers. From there they got a free reign to build from the bottom up.

Re: Some of the posters on here...
I think that most fans would prefer that we didn't have the debacle of moving into a huge new stadium just as we were being relegated to the Championship. Although it's be classic West Ham.

Even more important, as far as I'm concerned, is losing two fairly decent owners. Who would replace them? Terry Brown?

That said, I think Bilic made a mistake. The fans wanted to see a half decent tilt at Europe in our final season at UP. Or at least an honest attempt at it. Losing at Arsenal would not have been the end if the world.

I think it's better that Bilic learns that now so he doesn't throw an FA Cup game just because it's inconvenient.

"Miike, to be honest, I think the main reason for all the shit being flung at him is a backdrop of everyone being so angry about last season. "

I think you are spot on with this. Some folk are just so caught up in the vitriol against the clubs recent seasons that they have forgotten how, or are weary of feeling anything positive.

Everything is met with a bit of scorn as well as though we are so fatigued and jaded with it all, that we instinctively 'know' its going to be a shit season with shit players and a shit manager and a shit chairmen and if the worst happens...."Well its typical West Ham"

Re: Some of the posters on here...
Disappointing as the last week was, we need to wipe the slate clean and go from here.... it isn't going to do any good to rev ourselves up into a frenzy if / when we succumb to the inevitable tomorrow.

Lets just give it a real go tomorrow and go from there.

FWIW I reckon our season could be the reverse of last season... I can see us struggling for the first few months but once everything settles down and Obiang, Carroll, Valencia (and Song?) return from injury, we will go from strength to strength and have a good second half to the season.... just hope we don't make any stupid, knee jerk reactions in November!!

Re: Some of the posters on here...
Yes Griff, but fuck me, sometimes clubs like Southampton get it right. They have a good structure, a good manager, and they are getting it right.

We haven't, really. No problem chewing the fat over that. But should we not at least give a manager longer than his first ever fucking pre-season with us, before calling for his head?

Eerie Descent 11:04 Sat Aug 8
Re: Some of the posters on here...
Miike, to be honest, I think the main reason for all the shit being flung at him is a backdrop of everyone being so angry about last season. We're already in battle mode with the previous manager, so the very first thing that goes wrong, all this shit starts.

I mean seriously, taking everything else away what has gone on before, there are people calling for a managers head before a ball has been kicked in the league. We've had a fucked up pre-season schedule, the manager is learning about all his players, the last thing he really needed, in his first pre-season at the club, was the shit that Europa League qualification brings. That's without the fact of how big this season is for us as a club.

Everyone bangs on about Koeman, but he has had a year already at the club, they actually qualified for the Europa league by being excellent as a team last season, it's a completely different kettle of fish. I'll say it again, just for BC's sake, but I genuinely can't believe that what is a high number of our fans can't look at the whole picture. It's quite astounding.

stewie griffin 11:03 Sat Aug 8
Re: Some of the posters on here...
To be honest, Jibbers, I think the whole club needs to take a long hard look at itself.

This nonsense about how we MUST not get relegated this year - the entire club has talked itself into a hugely pressurised situation already. We must not get relegated any year, this is no different. If we aren't ready to move, we shouldn't be moving. Really very simple.

Collins is a fuckwit, who did as much to cost as the tie as anyone.

Bilic made a mistake, no two ways about it. Fine, he's only been here 2 minutes, and everyone makes them. Just don't repeat it.

The thing that really sticks in my throat though, is where we are as a club.
Southampton, South-fucking-Hampton. Got promoted the same time as us. Have smaller crowds. Smaller income. Sold half their first team last summer. Couldn't even name their full quota of subs for some Premier League games last season.
So why, how, is it that they are able to finish 13 points clear of us, and have a squad capable of coasting through a tie 5-0 on aggregate without any of this bollocks?

The answer of course is hopeless management, including the owners. Past and present. We can only hope that the future is better.
And as for the shiny new stadium, as above, we're already making a damn sight more money than they are, and getting completely outperformed as a club; so it means fuck all, unless we get the running of the club right.

Re: Some of the posters on here...
Not what I'm saying at all, Miike.

Whether you agree with it or not, Griff, it's happening. That's not the managers fault, and he DID try to get through, by playing a strong team in the first leg. Unfortunately, that didn't go to plan (as often happens in pre-season) and he wants to prioritise the league, no doubt pushed on that by Sullivan.

I know they can get injured in any match, but say we played Payet and Sakho on Thursday, it went to extra time, long flights, just before the league opener. I just don't think, with how important this season is, it would've been the best thing to do as a CLUB. Sorry for us fans not seeing Europe, but it's hardly crime of the fucking century, like I'm reading it is on here.

Takashi Miike 10:21 Sat Aug 8
Re: Some of the posters on here...
so you're saying this season is all about finishing 17th? is that the limit of your ambitions for the club? we deserve better

So, you're effectively blaming the OS for our exit, JIBBERS? Works for me.

Eerie Descent 9:50 Sat Aug 8
Re: Some of the posters on here...
Hopefully we'll be in a better state by then, Kronic, and we won't have sneaked in the back door of a competition we don't deserve to or are ready to be in?

If we do ever qualify for Europe again, it means we've done very well that season, and you'd think the squad would be very good, and not a squad who spent the last 5 months of last season in relegation form.
